From swapping failed halogens for LEDs to lighting a long dark driveway in Mount Evelyn, lighting work is the most common non-urgent job in the region. Use the quote form above and a licensed electrician will quote it.
Should I replace halogen downlights with LEDs?
Usually yes, and the reasons go well beyond the power bill. Halogen downlights run extremely hot, which is why ceiling insulation has to be held clear of them and why they were involved in a great many roof space fires. They fail often, and in a house with twenty of them the replacement lamps alone add up. LED equivalents run cool enough that many are rated for direct contact with insulation, last for years rather than months, and draw a fraction of the power.
The swap is not always as simple as changing the lamp. Older installations use transformers that may not suit an LED load, the existing cut-out diameter often does not match modern fittings, and old halogen fittings are frequently found with heat-damaged terminations and brittle insulation on the tails once they are pulled down. A proper conversion replaces the fitting and its termination, not just the globe, which is also the moment any heat damage in the ceiling space gets found.
It is worth thinking about the lighting design at the same time rather than replacing twenty downlights on a one-for-one basis. Rooms that were lit with halogens are often over-lit and badly zoned. Splitting a large open living area onto two switches, adding a dimmer where the wiring and fitting support it, and reducing the number of fittings while improving their placement usually produces a better result than a direct swap.
Outdoor, sensor and security lighting
The Yarra Valley has a lot of long driveways, unlit side paths, detached sheds and steep blocks, and outdoor lighting here does real work rather than being decorative. Sensor floodlights at the carport and the back door, path and step lighting on sloping ground, lighting to a shed or studio that is on its own sub-circuit, and lights on a timer for a property that sits empty on weekdays are all common requests around Healesville, Yarra Glen, Seville and Mount Evelyn.
Outdoor work is where installation quality shows up fastest. Fittings need to be rated for the position they are in, terminations need to be properly sealed, and cabling to a detached structure has to be run and protected correctly: buried at the right depth in suitable conduit, or run as approved aerial cable, with the sub-board and its protection sorted at the far end. The tell-tale sign of a poor job is the safety switch that starts tripping the first wet week after it was installed.
Why did all my lights go out at once?
In most houses, all the lighting sits on one or two circuits, so a single fault takes out far more than the fitting that caused it. The usual culprit is a lamp failing at end of life and drawing a momentary surge as it goes, which trips the breaker for the whole circuit, dramatic but harmless, and it resets. A repeat trip after resetting means something else: a damaged cable, moisture in a fitting, or a failed transformer or driver.
If lights flicker or dim rather than fail, that points somewhere different again: a loose connection at a fitting, a switch or the board, or a shared neutral problem. Loose terminations are worth taking seriously because they generate heat where nobody can see it. A light that flickers, a switch plate that feels warm, or a faint smell of hot plastic near a fitting all warrant a look rather than a wait-and-see.
Ceiling fans, exhaust fans and smoke alarms
These land with lighting because they usually share the same circuits and the same ceiling space. Ceiling fan installation is straightforward where an existing lighting point can carry it and the ceiling structure supports the mounting, and considerably less so where neither is true. Bathroom exhaust fans need to be ducted to outside air rather than into the roof space, which is one of the most common defects found in older houses across the region and shows up as a roof cavity full of moisture and, eventually, damaged ceiling plaster.
Smoke alarms are worth handling at the same time as any lighting work. Alarms have a service life after which they are replaced rather than re-batteried, and rental properties have their own requirements. If an electrician is already in your ceiling space changing fittings, that is the cheapest moment to have the alarms assessed and replaced.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put insulation over my LED downlights?
Only if the fittings are rated for it. Many modern LED downlights are, and they are marked accordingly, but not all. Old halogen fittings never were, which is why insulation had to be cut back around them. If you are insulating a ceiling, have the fittings identified first; abutting insulation against a fitting that is not rated for it is a fire risk.
Why do my LED lights flicker or buzz on a dimmer?
Usually a mismatch between the dimmer and the LED driver. Older dimmers were designed for resistive halogen loads and do not behave well with electronic drivers, and some LED lamps are simply not dimmable. The fix is normally a compatible trailing-edge dimmer, or lamps matched to the dimmer you already have.
How much does it cost to change over a house of downlights?
It depends on the number of fittings, whether the existing cut-outs match the new ones, the state of the terminations found in the ceiling, and whether the layout is being changed. This site does not publish prices. Ask for a written quote after someone has looked in the ceiling space, not before.
Can you install lighting to a shed or studio away from the house?
Yes, and it is a common job on the larger blocks around Yarra Glen, Healesville, Seville and Mount Evelyn. It usually means a properly rated sub-main to the outbuilding with its own protection at the far end, rather than an extension lead habit, which is what these jobs generally replace.
